Norman Island
Norman Island was the island Robert Louis
Stevenson used in his famous novel Treasure Island. Rich in pirate history,
the
island's reputed to still have undiscovered pirates treasure. Norman
Island is currently undeveloped, although plans are underway. From the main harbor, The Bight, there are wonderful hiking trails that lead you up
a goat path to a summit walk where you will see views over both sides of the
mountain. In the Bight are two raucous bars: the landbased Pirates Pub and the infamous Willy T, a floating bar. Both have restaurants that serve a variety of fare from hamburgers to ribs and fish. Parties at both bars are legendary.
Snorkeling around Norman Island is a real treat. Just outside the Bight are the Caves. Teeming with fish and beautiful coral, this is a must see. There are four caves. One is well above water and inaccessible. The other three you can snorkel into and around and search for the lost treasure. Story is, years ago a fisherman taking refuge from a storm in one cave came across a chest of doubloons. To this day, each female member of the family gets a gold doubloon set into a necklace on her wedding day.
Just outside the mouth of the Bight are The
Indians, a group of rocks that rise up from the ocean floor. Like the caves,
they are alive with fish and the coral colors and formations are well worth the
trip.
